Strategy, Negotiation & Decisive Leadership
for Asia and Beyond

Ragil Ratnam is a clinical psychologist, strategy and negotiation faculty, and executive coach who has spent 25 years helping leaders across Asia think more clearly, negotiate more effectively, and lead under pressure.

Where Strategy
Meets Psychology

Where Strategy
Meets Psychology

Most strategy consultants don’t understand human behavior.
Most leadership speakers don’t understand strategy.

Ragil does both — trained as a clinical psychologist, and for the past decade a strategy and negotiation faculty member at Sasin Business School and Duke Corporate Education.

He teaches MBA students and has designed and delivered leadership, strategy,
and negotiation programs in 15+ countries across Asia, Africa, Europe and the US, for organizations ranging from Coca-Cola, Unilever and Alcon to the 3M and PTTEP. His work sits at the intersection of rigorous strategic thinking and the psychology of how people actually decide, negotiate, and change.

Strategy Under Complexity

Strategy is only valuable when it changes the decisions people make. I help leadership teams translate strategic ambition into practical action through frameworks that simplify complexity without oversimplifying it. Alongside designing executive strategy programs for organisations ranging from Unilever to the Royal Thai Navy, I have evaluated and coached hundreds of strategic analyses, transformation plans, and business models across industries through my MBA and Executive Education teaching. This combination of boardroom practice and academic rigour provides a unique perspective on what separates compelling strategy from executable strategy.

Negotiation is fundamentally about relationships, not transactions. While grounded in established negotiation theory, my work focuses on the realities of negotiating across Asia, where trust, reputation, hierarchy, and long-term partnerships often matter as much as price or contractual terms. I help leaders navigate complex stakeholder environments, influence without authority, and create agreements that strengthen relationships while delivering commercial outcomes. My approach is informed by more than two decades of negotiating and advising across South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Southeast Asia.

The quality of leadership is ultimately determined by the quality of decisions. Drawing on my background as a clinical psychologist, I help leaders understand the behavioural, cognitive, and emotional factors that shape judgement under pressure. By combining psychology with practical leadership disciplines, I enable executives to build trust, foster psychological safety, lead difficult conversations, and make better decisions in uncertain environments. This approach has supported the development of leaders across multinational organisations including Hilton Worldwide, Capgemini, Robert Bosch, UNICEF, and the World Bank Group.

Signature Talks & Leadership Programs

Most organisations don’t suffer from a lack of strategic thinking—they suffer from too much imitation. Competitive benchmarking, best practices, and market analysis are valuable tools, but they often lead organisations towards convergence rather than distinction. Drawing on my work designing strategy programs for senior executives, together with reviewing hundreds of strategic analyses and transformation plans across industries, this session explores why the most successful organisations make different choices rather than better copies of the same choices. Participants leave with practical frameworks for building strategies that are distinctive, executable, and resilient in uncertain environments.

Negotiating Across the Grain:
Influence in Relationship-Based Cultures

Much of what is taught about negotiation assumes Western norms of directness, individualism, and transactional decision-making. Yet across much of Asia, successful negotiation depends on understanding relationships, hierarchy, trust, reputation, and the conversations taking place outside the meeting room. Drawing on more than two decades of negotiation across South Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Southeast Asia, this program helps leaders navigate cross-cultural negotiations, influence diverse stakeholders, and create agreements that strengthen relationships while achieving commercial objectives.

Leadership

Leadership is not a position but a mindset and set of behaviors. It’s about influencing and inspiring others to achieve things they could not do by themselves.

Empathy

True empathy requires cognitive and emotional understanding of self and others, combined with the drive to contribute positively to the greater community in a holistic way.

Strategy

Real strategy requires building a collaborative vision with the people who have to live in it, understanding complexity, and making decisions with the greatest positive long-term impact.

Empathy as a
Strategic Advantage

Empathy as a Strategic Advantage

Empathy is often dismissed as a soft skill, yet it is one of the most powerful capabilities in strategy, leadership, and negotiation. Leaders who accurately understand the motivations, constraints, and incentives of others consistently make better strategic choices, build stronger stakeholder coalitions, and negotiate more durable agreements. This session reframes empathy as a disciplined leadership capability—one that can be developed systematically and applied directly to influence, decision-making, customer understanding, and organisational performance.

Decisions Under Ambiguity:
Leading When the Data Runs Out

Leadership is ultimately judged by the quality of decisions made when certainty is impossible. Combining a background in clinical psychology with years of advising executives across industries, this session explores the behavioural biases, social dynamics, and cognitive shortcuts that shape decision-making under pressure. Participants learn practical approaches for improving judgement, leading through complexity, and making confident decisions without falling into the traps of overconfidence or false certainty.
